You Should Be Running

Yesterday as I took my first step to go running, this song came on.  The first words "You should be running while you can 'cause sooner or later the doors are closing in" struck me like the cold wind in my face.  The song isn't about running but I tend to make every song about running.  First, I can still run although I am 54, but sooner or later that time will come when I might not be able to, so I might as well run while I can.  Maybe it will be like the lady Joy Johnson, who ran her 25th NYC marathon in November, oldest lady ever to run it at 86 and died the day after.  "At least she was running, the way she wanted to go" said her daughter.  As I read the lyrics of this song, I understand what it is saying - the suggestion that a lady should be running from a bad situation with her man.  Not making light of that, let's put it into the context of running.  Let's define "him."  In running, the "gypsie viper", the "he" in these lyrics is your mind, maybe the "wall" in a marathon, the place where you want to stop, can't take it anymore.  Don't let him get to you, keep running.  Keep going.  Fight through the hard times on the run.  If you can make it through them, the easy times will be times of joy.  Although it might not seem like it, the hard times in a run will be joyous as well because you persevered.  You should be running.

Today Day 73: 10 miles: 2014: 402 miles

You should be running while you can
'Cause sooner or later the doors are closing in
Life has a tendency to build good traps
And that's not where you want to find yourself

The gypsie viper's got it's claw
He manufactures tricks for twisting laws
He knows of all the trials you've been through
He could persuade you to be on the tape

Baby, please
Don't let him get to you
'Cause you'll be wishing your dyin'
And he'll be kicking you
Kicking you when you're down

You were hurting when you learned
That when you kiss the flame, it burns
The only light that you could find was hot
Inside that room you felt the torched heat

And when the martyr comes to town
He'll tell you 'bout when he was down
You'll see the truth inside his bloodshot eyes
But will you walk the road that he lays out?

Baby, please
Don't let him get to you
'Cause you'll be wishing your dyin'
And he'll be kicking you
Kicking you when you're down

Baby, please
Don't let him get to you
'Cause you'll be wishing your dyin'
And he'll be kicking you
Kicking you when you're down

You should be running while you can
